Urging everyone to reduce the usage of plastic water bottles

- In the United States, on average, each of us is using roughly 167 disposable water bottles annually. There are 313.9 million people in the U.S. which means that we are using a total of 52 billion bottles annually in the U.S. alone. And much more, when you take into account the planet as a whole! This adds up quickly into millions of tons of plastic the world over, with the U.S. alone generating 480,000 tons of PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) plastic. This amount of plastic is enough to fill 11 football fields, 20 ft deep… EVERY YEAR!
- Shockingly, only 38 bottles of the 167 bottles that you use are likely to be recycled! Recycling also requires energy, and not only for the recycling process, but also for the transportation of this plastic. In the U.S., the recycling rate for plastic is only 23 percent, which means that 38 billion water bottles - about 8 football fields, or more than $1 billion worth of plastic are wasted each year. The recycling rates are even lower in the developing world! In these circumstances, the best course of action to help reduce the usage of plastic would simply be to use less of these plastic bottles. Reducing our consumption by only one bottle per month would reduce the amount of plastic bottles used every year by more than 3.7 billion bottles! That’s 34,654 tons of plastic!
- Additionally, drinking eight glasses of water a day from the tap cost us only $.49 - for the whole year!! That same amount of bottled water is about $1,400 per year. So we can save a ton of money along the way!
