The honouable SC has decided that to curb highway accidents and deaths and make roads safer, all liquor vends including restaurants and bars and hotels must stop selling / serving liquor starting April 1, 2017.

While the intention is honourable, the law is not right for various reasons.

1) We as responsible adults living in cities and towns have every right to go to hotels, restaurants and bars of our choice within the city / town and consume liquour,

2) Roads within municipal city limits should be exempt from the new law and liquor should be allowed to be served by hotels, restaurants and bars on roads within municipal city limits. Prime example as a case in point is the so called W.E.Highway from Dadar to Dahisar in Mumbai. Throughout this stretch this road is more of a crawl way than a highway. And the road is dotted with suburbs in both sides all along the Bandra to Dahisar stretch. And there are many hotels, restaurants and bars which are frequented by patrons. Why should these be shut down?

3) While we patrons will rue not being able to go to our favourite watering holes if the exception is not provided, we can easily go to alternate locations and have our tipple. But what about the livelihood of hundreds and thousands of staff, who have migrated here from far off places such as Bengal, Nepal etc and earn livelihood while living away from their families for better part of the year. They have become jobless overnight and will not find alternatives easily.
