Weston BLM started this petition to The City of Weston and

In the wake of the adoption of "A Resolution of the City Commission of the City of Weston, Florida, denouncing racism and bias and affirming the desire for an end to the misuse of authority by Law Enforcement Personnel", the City of Weston must create a Diversity Board.

Other cities in Broward County, such as Pembroke Pines and Deerfield Beach, have created Cultural and Diversity Boards to include their community of color as decision makers. We have seen the need to uplift the Black residents of Weston to advise the city on issues of racism and police reform.

We demand that the City Commission and the City Manager place an agenda item to officially create a Diversity Board, and that they propose a structure composed of Black residents, teachers, and students to advise the City Commission. This would allow the City to hear their perspectives on police conduct and the process of reforming our police practices, as well as racism in our schools, which students and teachers can shed light on.

This Diversity Board must also be empowered to investigate past issues of police misconduct and racial profiling that Black residents bring to light in the City. They would need funding and investigatory powers to carry out this function.

Overall, we call on the city to take this simple reform that other cities in Broward have had for years. It will give the Black community in Weston lasting power to have their voices heard in the city government, and help them have the authority to address issues of racism that the city recently condemned. If we don't take this imperative measure now, we risk losing the expert testimony of the Black community and making changes without their input.

Black Lives Matter. Thank you.
