I am calling on residents to voice your concerns over the increased traffic, speed and pedestrian “near misses” in the area of the Smallwood Drive/Park Avenue intersection. Specifically, the goal of this petition is to demand that the City of Mount Pearl take action to address the crosswalks at this intersection, which are generally ignored by drivers, as if they do not exist. This intersection would benefit from a pedestrian activated light and/or a 3 way stop.

Merely repainting the lines is of little use when drivers ignore the cross walk - I have repeatedly witnessed and experienced people pass cars on the inside when the car is stopped to allow someone to use the crosswalk. 

On May 4, 2021 I stopped my truck at this intersection to allow my own son to cross at the crosswalk as he was walking to the store. 2 cars passed me on the inside (single lane road) and despite him being on the crosswalk and me hitting the horn, the first car did not even slow down. Before he made it across, another car did the same. He told me the same thing happened on the way back. This is not the first time we have experienced this first hand at this intersection. 

I have emailed the City to express my concern over this intersection. I encourage you to do the same. If you have had a near miss or witnessed one at this intersection, I encourage you to email the City and let them know and to sign this petition.
