Why this petition matters

Started by Riverside residents for change

District D has been traditionally underserved in part due to the historical nature of its demographics. Now is the time for the COH to serve its residents here and show its support for district D.

Therefore, I am writing on behalf of riverside citizens in the city of houston that live along the 2400-2500 block of calumet street and the 2500-2600 block of prospect street.

We have been experiencing multiple incidents of “hit and run” accidents on our vehicles wile parking on the street. This is namely due to the fact that parking is currently allowed on both sides of the streets and they have become so congested that cars simply can’t navigate through them safely.

For example, one resident in the 2400 block of calumet has had his car hit 3 times and he has lived there three years. I have been using the Street parking along prospect in the 2600 block for two months and one of my cars has already been hit.

We had all hoped that the Addition of speed humps along these blocks would subdue the issue, but it has done nothing. There is also an issue for police and EMS vehicles, they simply can’t fit down the street with residents parking on both sides. I have seen delivery and moving trucks almost hit cars on the street as they try to turn into calumet drive lofts at 2605 calumet street.

Seeing that this blockage is incredibly unsafe and the issue has now been documented with the city via this email, I am asking for prompt response to resolve the situation.

I would hate to see the city held liable if nothing is done. (What if an EMS vehicle is unable to navigate resulting in further harm to an individual who needs timely treatment transportation?)

I call upon all the entities included within (Parking management and 311 along with our district D representative) to work together and send out an engineer to evaluate the safety and flow issues impairing the functionality and safety in this area.

There are two options for resolution currently up for evaluation:

1. make parking on one side of the street only on calumet street and prospect street.

2. induce one way traffic flow on calumet street within the 2400 block.
