OPEN LETTER

Governor Inslee, OSPI, DoH, and L&I:

We call for the six-foot distance guideline in schools in the State of Washington to be immediately reduced to three feet or eliminated entirely.

Governor Inslee, President Biden, OSPI, and others have agreed that schools need to be open for instruction to educate our kids who are the future of this great country. However the six-foot guideline is preventing schools from opening full-time because it significantly reduces the number of students that can be allowed in classrooms, thereby necessitating part-time distance learning.

Unfortunately, part-time, in-person school does not work. It is very challenging for teachers to switch back-and-forth between Zoom and in-person, which GREATLY reduces the time that students are receiving instruction.

We have seen first-hand that our children are not receiving a full-time education with this model, nor with the full-time distance learning model. Those particularly harmed by these models are the children who don't have the family support or structure necessary to be successful when learning from home.

Our children need to receive full-time instruction every day to keep up with their grade level! FULL-TIME, IN-PERSON education is the only solution that will work for the majority of students and their families, and the six-foot distance guideline needs to be reduced or eliminated in order to make this happen.

We understand that there are risks associated with reducing or eliminating the distance guideline. However, the risks of failing our children are far greater.

The change to the six-foot policy must not be delayed. Please consider this petition seriously and take the initiative to change the six-foot guideline before it causes further damage to our children.

Sincerely,

Concerned Parents, Teachers, and Citizens of the State of Washington
