General Iron is a metal recycling factory that currently is operating near Lincoln park on the North Side. General Iron put out a statement that goes as follows, “RMG is excited about replacing Gll’s North Side operation with RMG’s new metal shredding and recycling facility along the Calumet River in Chicago.” This move is expected to come about around the end of 2021.

This move may not sound like major news, but it can have some terrible effects on our neighborhood. As you may know, the Southeast/west side of Chicago has the city’s most polluted environment. “Chicagoans in minority neighborhoods on the West Side and South Side have the greatest exposure to toxic air pollution and other environmental health hazards in the city” a statement by the Chicago Sun-Times. This General Iron site is only going to contribute to this piled up mess. This facility is also going to be operating half a mile from the nearest High School, let alone the neighborhood. The work done at metal shredding companies is often loud and abrupt. The distracting nature that this move can bring may distract students who will attend Washington Highschool, and therefore being an obstacle for the school to work around. All in all, if you sign this petition today, we might be able to stop General Iron from moving into our neighborhood and damaging our environment. I propose for RMG to move their operations to an area that isn’t already heavily populated and polluted, they are not constricted to Chicago and can go to many other places.
