Plastic bags alone cause over 200,000 marine deaths each year. A plastic bag can take up to 1,000 years to break down in the environment, and as they break down, plastic particles contaminate soil and waterways and enter the food web when animals accidentally ingest them. Plastic bags don’t biodegrade, they photodegrade, meaning they break down into smaller and smaller toxic pieces. In the ocean, these pieces end up in giant whirlpool currents that are called gyres.

About 90% of the debris in the Earth’s water is plastic, and in some areas there is over 45 times more plastic available than food for the marine wildlife to eat. Plastic debris contains a high concentration of accumulated organic pollutants like DDT and PCBs, and most of the pollutants are endocrine disrupters. When marine wildlife ingest the harmful plastic, they’re also ingesting these toxins as well.

We already do enough damage to our beautiful home above the surface, so why spread it below? If you don’t do it for the animals, do it for the people who consume these animals who have consumed these toxins. Plastic waste is a cancer to the Earth, and should not continue to harm the planet. Even if no bill gets passed, you can still do your part by bringing organic, re-usable bags to the grocery store. I do believe that we as a species, as a family who all share the same home, can make a change and stop the harming of this magnificent planet that we call home.
