We are appalled at the Government’s decision to reject Leeds City Council’s levelling up bid to redevelop Fearnville Sports Centre into a modern Wellbeing Centre in East Leeds.
Since 2012, the government has slashed hundreds of millions of pounds of funding to Leeds City Council and now they have rejected this £20 million bid.
Yet in the budget, the government found billions to give bankers a tax cut.
East Leeds is officially one of the most economically deprived communities in the country - exactly the kind of place where ‘levelling up’ is actually needed.
We call on the government to stop ignoring East Leeds residents, change its tune and back this bid.
