Association for the Youth Vote started this petition to The Canadian Parliament

Since young people are affected by the many decisions made by government - especially when it comes to their decisions on education, climate change action, mental health services, and others - we deserve a say in how these decisions get made. If we truly want our system to be democratic, Canada’s voting age must be lowered to sixteen.

The past decade has seen young people as the face of social movements, leading the way in climate strikes, education advocacy, and the Hong Kong Umbrella Movement of 2014. The youth care about politics. They care about what the government does. They shouldn’t have to resort to large-scale protests to make their voices heard.

Youth voter turnout remains disappointingly low in almost all settings. However, in every case in which the voting age has been lowered where the research has been done (Takoma Park, Maryland; Austria; Scotland), 16-17s vote in greater numbers than older first-time voters. Since voting has been found to be habit-forming, lowering the voting age could easily result in substantial upticks in overall turnout rates.

Give young people the platform and voice that they so crucially need. Support the lowering of the voting age.
