Whereas there has been a violent military coup in Bolivia which has unconstitutionally and illegally overturned the elected government

Whereas the military is conducting a vicious campaign of military repression and assassination directed specifically at the indigenous population of that country who constitute 90% of the population,

Whereas the government of Canada has proclaimed that it stands for the defence of human rights and the rule of law

Whereas Canadas has been established on the territory of the indigenous people of the country, and has a responsibility to stand up for the rights of indigenous peoples.

We call on the government to respect the rights of indigenous peoples throughout the continent and to be consistent in its  claims to stand for human rights and the rule of law.

The surious claim of electoral irregularities  is absolutely no excuse for a completely unconsittutional and illegal coup and for the violent suppression of those who express opposition to it.

We call on the government of Canada to immediately withdraw all support from the instigators of the coup, to call on the armed forces to return to barracks, for the president to be allowed to return in peace and without threat to his person to the country, and for Bolivia's own constitutional processes to be allowed to take their course free from external interference, as is guaranteed by the United Nations Charter of which Canada is a signatory and thereby obliged to respecd.
