Indigenous women and girls are going missing and getting murdered all across Canada.  Despite Indigenous women making up 3% of the female population, homicide rates continue to grow and was nearly seven times higher between 1997 and 2000. In 582 cases gathered by NWAC (Native Women’s Association of Canada), 67% are murder cases which were caused by homicide or negligence, 20% are missing women or girls, 4% are suspicious deaths either natural or caused by the police (but is considered a suspicious death by their family or community members), and 9% of cases where the nature of the case is unknown. In 2021, this issue continues to grow, and the Canadian Government has not taken action, along with limited conversations of the racial inequality and violence happening to the Indigenous communities. The silence is loud, and the avoidance is alarming. The government must work towards extending their national inquiry, and to truly progress towards change, that requires to push towards listening to Indigenous voices when speaking out on racial injustices happening in their community and supporting the families who are put at risk. To live as equals in a “strong and free” country, effective action must be taken and we need awareness to take measures to put an end to all the violence. Spotlight this reoccurring issue to prevent the endangerment of Indigenous women and girls to be no longer.
