The End of the 50 Mile Regulation

We, the residents of California, call for the elimination of the "50 Mile" Regulation imposed by the Office of Migrant Services. We believe that this regulation is discriminatory, as it forces families with children in school to leave their children's school districts at least twice a year in order to be eligible to reside in the state-sponsored migrant housing centers the following year. This requirement further burdens their children's ability to achieve academic success and keeps families in the cycle of poverty.

At bare minimum, we demand that a waiver system be implemented that would allow migrant families who reside in the state-sponsored migrant housing centers to choose to stay in their children's school district in between periods of farm work, with the understanding that they would still be eligible to live in the housing centers the following year.
