(Paul) Jock Palfreeman is a young Australian man who is serving a 20 year prison sentence in Sofia Central Prison, Bulgaria. He was born in New South Wales in November 1986.
Jock has been described as an idealist with a strongly developed social conscience. Even while still at school he was a budding political activist, at one stage having campaigned against Australian involvement in the the Iraqi war. Adventurous and keen to see the world, by the age of 19 Jock was already overseas, visiting Bulgaria, which he really loved.
In late December 2007, 21 year old Jock was celebrating with friends in the city of Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. After a few beers, he was walking home at about 1am when, according to Jock and other witnesses, he came across a large group of local men, all around his own age, physically attacking two Romas (gypsies). When Jock intervened, the gang turned their attention to him. When Jock emerged from the melee that followed, during which he was knocked to the ground and pelted with pieces of concrete, he found himself in the clutches of security guards and soon afterwards accused of cold-blooded murder.
