Why this petition matters

Started by Peter Knight

I call upon the British Government to act now against the removal of historical statues and memorials in Great Britain. Also in preventing the renaming of any public buildings or names of roads and streets. Whilst the very vocal minority are calling for this action and being given dispraportionate consideration by various local authorities and organisations, this is not representative of the vast silent majority.

Therefore I request that no public or private statue, memorial or renaming of any buildings roads or institutions be permitted without a full public vote of those affected in the constituency in which the act of removal would affect.

This is not just our heritage it is our future generation's heritage. We cannot and must not erase the past and change history in order to satisfy an extreme minority and political ideology. Without a past we have no future. If we allow this what will the extremists be demanding we have removed from our society, culture and way of life next. It's time we stopped pandering to the minority and listened to the quiet ordinary people who are not demanding, shouting or threatening. Let's simply have a public vote on these matters. If nothing else the decision to remove or rename should be a democratic one.
