We all know that the country is in crisis. People are struggling, people are being put into financial difficulty and the heartbreaking death toll of COVID -19 is effecting every single one of us. There does appear to be great support for our key workers in every quarter of society but what is not being dealt with particularly in England but also in the other home nations, is the fact that most key workers are on low pay. These are the frontline staff dealing with this horrendous virus. Many have to struggle financially in the best of times and while it is important to support businesses and big institutions the people who are putting their lives on the line every day in extremely difficult circumstances have not been furloughed and are still paying full taxes and full rent etc. They truly are grateful for the emotional support the nation is providing but the UK Government needs to recognise the difficulties they face and the sacrifice they are making in just going to work. All NHS and CARE legitimate staff should receive a 100% tax rebate backdated to the start of the lockdown until the lockdown is lifted. We should also explore this extending to all emergency services, police, fire and coastguard and all essential workers not exclusively but including supermarket employees at store level, refuge collectors, postal workers, bus drivers, train drivers etc. Not executives, those who have to go out on the frontline. The frontline is the normal workplace and they interaction with other people every working day, risking their lives for all of us.
