The Spanish government have issued a European arrest warrant for Clara Ponsati, professor of Economics and Finance at the University of St Andrews.

The former education minister in the Catalan government is wanted in Spain on a charge of sedition due to her role in the push for Catalonian Independence. The prosecutors are arguing that the declaration of independence was an attack on the Spanish state and have accused some of the leaders of the movement of a serious act of rebellion.

Dr Ponsati, 62, could face a sentence of up to 15 years if she is extradited. However, she denies wrongdoing and says she will resist extradition. The move comes after nine Catalan leaders were convicted of sedition over their role in an unsanctioned referendum on independence in 2017.

Her lawyer, Aamer Anwar, said Ponsati believed her extradition would be “unjust and oppressive” and they intended to use the “show trials” of Catalan leaders to show that Spanish courts cannot guarantee “independence, human rights or justice”.

This European arrest warrant is clearly a political move, intended to silence the calls for Catalan independence. We call on the British government to unilaterally reject this request to show support for human rights and the basic legal process.

This is an attack on the right to political self-determination, the right to protest and citizens' right to vote. We urge the British government to support Catalonia's right to self-determination and free and fair elections.

The use of politically motivated violence on the Catalan people during the 2017 independence referendum demonstrates the disregard that the Spanish government for the citizens of the region. The authorities are not able to safeguard democracy and the right to vote. For this reason, we should not extradite the leaders of the Catalan independence referendum, leaving them at the mercy of an unrepentant Spanish government.

We further call on the staff, students and the University of St Andrews to show their support for Dr Ponsati and the universal right to self-determination and protest.
