Boston Community Leadership Academy, Hats, Head Scarves, Head Gear, Bandannas, and Electronics Policy states Students are NOT permitted to wear hats, hoods, headgear, headscarves in the building at any time. Head Scarves may be worn based on religion only. As students, we feel as though student this policy is unjust hence the fact that not only is a headscarf worn for religious reasons but also cultural.
Our voices should be heard about a current issue regarding the use of headscarves and do-rags. In the BPS student handbook it states “ students have the right to have their voices heard in matters affecting them”,“ students have the right to participate in the development of rules and regulations to which they are subject and the right to be notified of such rules and regulations” and also "Personal privacy, including the right to determine their own appearance and select their own style of hair and clothing, subject to reasonable rules necessary for health and safety concerns."
We are asking BCLA to change this head-wrap policy. We are also demanding a teacher forum where we could discuss other changes we the students may want to make in the future.
Sign this petition in efforts to changing this policy and other policies, us students do not agree with. This is only the beginning.
