Adams City High School in Commerce City was put on a five year turn-around stage by the state of Colorado, the reason being that our student's CSAP/TCAP and ACT scores were under state levels. We are currently in the last two years of the 5 year turn around. Recently the administration has motivated the staff and students with the slogan "STOP THE CLOCK.” They believe that our students will accomplish the following: 100% Graduation Rate, 80% Proficiency Rate on TCAP, 80% Post High School Rate, and ACT Scores of 18 or above. They have taken extreme measures and have made all teachers re-apply for the jobs that they have worked so hard for. In this process, about half of the teachers in the building were not renewed, including two of the best teachers in the building.
One of those teachers is Erik Tucker, a very loved History/Avid teacher. He has taught at Adams City for 5 years. He is also the Junior Class Sponsor, taking on many responsibilities including Senior Prom. He has dedicated long hours and weekends to help us fundraise as much money as is possible. Mr. Tucker teaches in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Academy. We believe the decision that our administration made was not in the best interests of our students and we want them to reconsider it.
Our other teacher is Mr. Hall. He teaches Algebra II & Geometry. He has taught at Adams City for 3 years. He does all that is within his abilities to get students to understand math. He is a great teacher; however, he is also the Football Coach and Wrestling Coach for our school. He takes both academic education and physical education seriously, coming 1 to 2 hours before school starts to work out with students. He is always open to help his students and others that don't have his class during his off-periods, lunch, and even after school. Mr. Hall is the teacher that every one wishes they had. It is unfair that a teacher such as him has been non-renewed when he has gone above and beyond his job requirements.
We want to get as much support to present to the Board of Education on March 26, 2013. It is a very last minute petition but we have just recently found out about what has happened. It is really important that the Board hears what we have to say and take into consideration our thoughts. We ask you to sign this petition and support the fight for our Adams City High School teachers.
Once again, good luck and if there is anything I can help your cause with, please let me know.
