Have you ever hit rock bottom in life? Maybe after a divorce or death of a spouse or child you found yourself overcome by debts. These debts grow in size everyday they remain unpaid, only compounding an unfortunate life event with financial burdens that you are unable to satisfy.

If you are one of the thousands of Americans seeking good jobs, reasonable wages and benefits and are in debt, you may run into hurdles looking for employmentI If you have bad or spotty credit you may find something you most likely qualify for but are passed over due to something else besides work qualifications. What is that one report that has become a standard tool employers use and may keep you from getting it? It's the consumer credit report.

While not a bad concept, it seems unfair to punish the average job seeker because they had financial troubles and seek work to start filling those outstanding balances. Instead, a worker may lose out because of a score. Little options for real, livable wages exist when credit worthiness becomes a factor. While you may argue that the equally qualified seeker should prevail because of a credit score does seem ligitimate, but shouldn't it be determined on merit only?

I believe we should make it illegal to use consumer reporting agencies when seeking employment. Maybe we should be allowed to look into the finances of potential employers as well, since they do. We could justify it by arguing that we have a financial interest in the information. They are seeking to employ us and need to pay us wages. What if they were less than stellar on meeting their obligations? Seems like a bit of a double standard. What should be taken into account is qualifications, experience, character, integrity, work history and verifiable references. If John Smith missed a payment or two during his divorce or Suzy Miller had medical bills go to collections because of unfoseeun circumstances that should not hold you back from a job. A job that in turn could earn you the wages to remidy those issues.
