Australia deserves accurate seafood labelling
This petition had 46,051 supporters
Australians love seafood, but few realise where their seafood is from, how it was caught, and exactly what species they're eating. Over 70% of seafood sold in Australia is imported, some from places that don't uphold the same stringent environmental and ethical standards we demand in our own waters. A voluntary system of labelling has failed. It has allowed ready-to-eat seafood (that sold in restaurants, takeaways, cafes and pubs) to be sold under mysterious names such as 'fish' or 'flake' and while most of us assume we're eating local, most of the time we're not. Legislative change can bring about a cultural shift that voluntary labelling hasn't, which would be good for the consumer, good for the environment, and good for those in the business of responsible fishing. We the signatories of this petition ask the Australian Parliament to amend legislation to mandate the use of proper fish names, and country of origin for all seafood sold in Australia.
