Apologise for saying 'boat people' are illegal arrivals
No matter what your opinion on how or where refugees should have their applications processed; how we minimise the number of asylum seekers dying at sea; or your thoughts on how we support asylum seekers to become positive contributors to our communities; one thing is clear: people must know the truth.
It is not illegal to arrive in Australia by boat and seek asylum.
The Australian Human Rights Commission states: "Australia has obligations to protect the human rights of all asylum seekers and refugees who arrive in Australia, regardless of how or where they arrive and whether they arrive with or without a visa".
Statements made by Tony Abbott and others which suggest otherwise are defamatory and only contribute to further persecution.
A national correction and apology must be made to asylum seekers, and the Australian people.
- Leader of the Opposition, Federal Member for Warringah
Can you please issue a national apology for saying it is illegal to arrive in Australia by boat and seek asylum?
