Medicare rebates for counselling sessions.

Medicare rebates for counselling sessions.
Why this petition matters
Medical modeling and restricted access to mental health services are causing deaths in Australia. When people struggle with mental health, engaging with a psychologist or psychiatrist is not always an individual's preference, and can be detrimental to one's mental health, and to further engagement with mental health professionals. The people of Australia deserve choices about their mental health, and should not have to pay large amounts to engage with therapy of their choosing.
As it stands today, people on Medicare can get rebates for seeing a psychologist or a psychiatrist, but if one desires to see a counsellor, the out of pocket cost is too high, for the people who need support the most, to access. Carl Rogers' research in the 60's has already proven that positive change is largely created by humanistic practices, and by restricting services to Australian's in need of connection and understanding, the chances of recovery and positive change are significantly reduced, and Australian's will suffer and die.
Australians deserve positive connections. Australians deserve holistic practices. Australians deserve a model of mental health based on positive outcomes, not clinical assessments and practices that do not consider the individual and their beliefs
Australians deserve to be able to access counselling services in the same way they can access psychologists and psychiatrists, with the same rebates and concessions. Psychologists and psychiatrists are leaving the profession due to being overwhelmed, and a way to relieve the burden they feel also needs to be addressed. Counsellors should be as accessible as psychologists and psychiatrists
