Australia still allows fur imports from other countries. In some cases the furs have been provided by ripping the skins off animals while they are still alive. A ban on the importation of fur from domestic dog and cats has been in place since 2004 but the Government is refusing to extend it to other animals farmed in inhumane fur factories.

A spokeswoman for the Home Affairs Minister Brendan O'Connor said the current ban on cat and dog hair would not be extended to include raccoon dog fur.
