Request for modifications to the age limit for skilled Permanent Visa Applications.

In July 2017, the age limit for skilled independent permanent visa applicants, including medical specialists, was lowered without notice and without the inclusion of a grandfather clause, from 50 to 45. This has seriously impacted a high proportion of experienced overseas-trained skilled workers who had recently met application criteria or who were hoping to be eligible in the foreseeable future.
We request consideration of the following relevant modifications for those specialists already residing in Australia who have undertaken or are currently undertaking the onerous requirements necessary to work in their field.
- A grandfather clause be added to retain the age limit that was in force prior to July 2017.
- Consideration be given to the number of years already worked on a skilled temporary visa, and that these years be subtracted from the applicant’s age.
- Consideration be given to age limit exemption for medical specialists and other experienced skilled workers until the ceiling is satisfied.
We further suggest, in order to facilitate the immigration of overseas specialists in the future, that consideration be given to increasing the upper age limit to 50, as the process is invariably a lengthy one.
