Tougher sentencing for Hit-and-Run Drivers in the UK

This petition had 4,286 supporters

The hit-and-run driver who killed young cousins as they crossed road is jailed for four years.

When I read this headline today the only words I had to describe it was "disgraceful". It makes my blood boil that the lack of justice these two young girls and their families deserved, has not been demonstrated. How do you get just four years imprisonment for taking the lives of two innocent young children?

I live close by to where this atrocity took place and, being a father myself, I cannot imagine the pain and suffering these families are going through. But, to then learn that this person behind the wheel who caused death by careless driving, failing to stop after a collision, failing to report a collision, driving without a license and conspiracy to pervert the course of justice, was handed just a four-year sentence. And will (probably) only serve half of his sentence in prison whilst the other half will be spent on license in the community.

Has the justice system worked here? Is this really the world we live in?

The maximum prison sentence for causing death by careless or inconsiderate driving is five years; and for causing death by driving whilst unlicensed, disqualified or uninsured it is two years.

How does this sentence deter others from putting people's lives in serious danger?

We need to address and change the laws written for dangerous driving or careless driving immediately. We need to review the sentencing to prevent families from having their world ripped apart. No human being should be allowed to walk the streets and get behind the wheel of a car again in such a pitifully short space of time after committing such a horrendous crime.

Please sign this petition if you would like to see stricter sentencing for dangerous drivers and, hopefully, we will see a drastically reduced number of crimes of this horrible nature.
