Dear Prime Minister
We have written to you earlier on matters relating to resolving the mystery surrounding the disappearance of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, and it was our pleasure to be with you when in October 2015 you announced the declassification of files related to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.
Today we write to you with another request, which has been raised many times by several people and groups in the past decades but went unheeded by the Government of the day. We are hopeful that with your focus on nationalism, patriotism and the sense of pride and belonging for being an Indian that you are trying to instil within the country and among the diaspora across the world, you will not treat our plea with silence. Because only few people appear in history who become symbols of patriotism across class, caste, region, ideology and partisan politics. Without belittling the contribution of our great leaders who laid the foundation of our nation, we can say, Netaji is one of the rarest and the brightest examples of burning patriotism whose light still shines on millions of Indians, despite official apathy towards him for seven decades after his disappearance.
Netaji needs no introduction and his impact on our national life, despite his absence after we gained independence, cannot be overstated. We are confident that you share our views on this matter.
Hence, we request you to undo the injustice done to the man who sacrificed everything in life so that we may be free and accomplished unthinkable feats of heroism that remain as an ideal in front of us Indians. In specific, we appeal to you to take two steps that would salvage ourselves from the injustice we have done by trying to relegate him to the one corner of our history. Additionally in the context of our times, these will go a long way to acknowledge Japan’s role in aiding our freedom movement and reaffirm the cultural and strategic ties between the two countries. We request that you
1. Announce 23 January, the birthday of Netaji as Deshprem Diwas reflecting institutional acceptance of the patriotic zeal of which he was the epitome. Until now we have had Teachers’ Day to remember and pay respects to our teachers on the birthday of Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, Good Governance Day on the birthday of Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Doctors’ Day on the birthday of Dr BC Roy, Engineer’s Day honour of Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, National Science Day in honour of Chandrashekhara Venkata Raman and many such days to commemorate values and individuals who represented them best. We hope you will concur that patriotism is a value that needs to be celebrated and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose was its personification.
2. Declare suitable celebratory events to mark the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the Provisional Government of Azad Hind on October 21. Without going into a discussion on well-known historical events, it would suffice to point out that the Government of exile not only brought Indian diaspora on an unprecedented scale across vast geographical area in their struggle gain freedom for their motherland, but provided the decisive blow to the British Raj, compelling it to quit India. This momentous event has never been celebrated in the scale that it deserves. We look forward to you to bring in the change and set on a year of official observation of the event.
Prime Minister Sir, we sincerely hope you will respond to these requests and make the announcements at the earliest.
On behalf of Mission Netaji.
