Kartika Jain started this petition to The Animal Welfare Board of India and

I wish to draw the attention of everyone to the callous, inhuman and reckless behaviour of the railway officials towards animals who are being shifted through trains.

Recently, a dog by the name of Sparkle was being shifted from Amritsar to Mumbai, the dog was a small white five year old dog, and he was loaded with the luggage, in the Paschim Express like an object rather than a living being. The cages in the parcel compartment are small, poorly ventilated, noisy and secluded from the owners. Moreover these are inadequate at most times and passengers are unsure whether they could actually get a confirmed ticket for their pets till the last moment. Pets go through immense trauma in this process. In the same sense, Sparkle was soon found dead for 'mysterious reasons', and the family has blamed the railway ministry's insensitive behaviour towards animals.

I myself have faced a very similar situation, in the scorching heat of April, we were travelling with two of our dogs to Bina, a small town in central India. We too had informed the railway officers beforehand that we would be travelling with our dogs, and requested for the first-class AC compartment, which is invariably allotted to only VIPs and ministers, basically its impossible to get ahold of it. When we reached the station, to our dismay, the officials refused our request and were adamant on placing them in the luggage compartment, with almost no ventilation and no facility for water or sleeping. Not to mention that the officers handling the compartment were disrespectful, insensitive and very rude, saying that we were "causing a scene" and "they're just animals". They also said that they could only allow one dog  and it was impossible to travel with more than one dog in the country. We were lucky that we were able to convince the people who had the first AC to switch seats with us and our dogs reached safely, otherwise they might have met the same fate as Sparkle.

Through this petition, I demand the Railway ministry, to allot a well ventilated, hygienic and well facilitated compartment for pets and animals, and if this proves to be 'too difficult', then at least the pets which we so lovingly look after, are given a priority in the AC coupe', because I'm sure that people can sit with people irrespective of their post/position.

I also hope that through this petition we can spread sensitivity towards pets within the officers of the railway and transport ministry, and teach the officers how to treat animals, and how they too have feelings and emotions, like other animals.
