The Founding Fathers established the Electoral College in the Constitution, in part, as a compromise between the election of the President by a vote in Congress and election of the President by a popular vote of qualified citizens. However, the term “electoral college” does not appear in the Constitution. Article II of the Constitution and the 12th Amendment refer to “electors,” but not to the “electoral college.”

Since the Electoral College process is part of the original design of the U.S. Constitution it would be necessary to pass a Constitutional amendment to change this system.

It is time for Americans to replace this arcane system with a straight popular vote. We should never again allow any person who has not won the popular vote of the people to be sworn in to the office of President of the United States.

I believe a positive side effect of abolishing the electoral college will be lesser voter apathy and thus a greater voter turnout. The effectiveness of any democracy is directly proportional to the level of participation of its members.

It is time we the people us the collective power we have to make America work for all of us. And I believe the best way for us to achieve that is for each of us to realize that our vote is power and we need to exercise that power. To partially quote Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, "Give us the ballot, and we will transform the salient misdeeds of bloodthirsty mobs into the calculated good deeds of orderly citizens."
