Shelby A started this petition to The American Historical Review

Several schools (grades K-12 and sometimes colleges) are being kept from the truth of America's past because school boards tailor textbooks to match their own political and religious views. Another reasoning is to protect the patriotic image of the country and/or the government. Some school boards have gone as far as erasing slavery, white conquest, instances of social strife, crucial activists, and more.

By depriving students of the truth, they will never learn about the real evolution of American history. They won't know how important changes occurred and the growth that comes from those changes. How can we learn from our mistakes if we choose to sweep them under the rug? Without being truthful about America’s flaws, history will repeat itself.

Now that I have done my own research in college, I have discovered some lies I have been fed throughout my years and I don't want others to be taught the same way I was. I want people to grow up knowing the truth instead of being blind to some of the most pressing social issues/historical heroes.

In order to stop this problem, there must be restrictions for school boards and more power to the unbiased, qualified officials such as American Historical Review members. By signing this, we can work towards this need for reviewers more concerned with accuracy than saving face.
