Analyzing medical death rate data over an eight year period, Johns Hopkins patient safety experts calculated that more than 250,000 deaths per year are due to medical errors in the US. Data from Patient Safety America (PSA) estimates the number to be much higher: 440,000. These figures alone justify patients having at least one family member or friend with them during an office visit or hospital stay.

Heart patients, cancer patients, stoke patients, Alzheimer patients, diabetic patients, patients with respiratory disease, patients involved in accidents, in patients, out patients, ALL patients, should have an advocate with them while receiving medical care. It is not only medically necessary, but it's also humane to consider those in need of emotional support. It is insane for a man not to be allowed to see his wife in a nursing home for months on end while the caregivers and housekeepers freely come and go. It is time to use common sense while making life altering decisions for the American people.

I tend to think a lot about a close friend who's wife lost their child in her womb. She was left to deal with the heartbreak alone while her husband sat outside in a car. This should NOT be our reality.

As long as the family member or friend behave in a respectable manner and follow safety measures, they should be allowed to be with their child, spouse, parent, sibling or friend. Until now, a family member or friend were a welcomed part of a patients care.
