Ella G started this petition to The Agnes Irwin School

While logging my service hours on my school’s website I noticed that the Agnes Irwin School has Autism Speaks listed as a possible organization to volunteer for. Autism Speaks is an extremely harmful organization that has been called a hate group by many autistic activists. I would not consider any work for this group community service.

Reasons why Autism Speaks is harmful will be linked below, but I’ll summarize some of the reasons here.

Autism Speaks’ research is not focussed on improving the lives of individuals on the autism spectrum; this organization is trying to find a way to prevent autism. This organization sees autistic individuals as burdens on society and wishes to remove this “burden”. It also sends this message in its fundraising tactics, while also promoting fear and stigma around autistic people and perpetuating harmful stereotypes.

Autism Speaks is also trying to create a prenatal test for autism so that less autistic babies will be born. This is literally eugenics. The institution’s name itself claims to advocate for autistic people, but it believes that the people it is advocating for should not even exist.

Autism Speaks is a dangerous organization and the Agnes Irwin School should not consider helping this institution an act of community service. I believe that the school should...

1. Remove Autism Speaks from their list of organizations to volunteer for

2. Issue a statement explaining why it was removed and apologize for any harm that advertising this organization did

Sincerely,

Ella G

Sophomore at The Agnes Irwin School
