Hana Nishiwaki started this petition to The administrators at Havergal College

The week of February 22-26, Pride week was held at Havergal College in support of the LGBTQIA2S+ people within the school community. To show support for these individuals, the school flew the progress flag beside the Canadian flag in front of the school.

The progress flag was conceptualized by Daniel Quasar, who wanted to create a flag that also draws attention to the intersectionality of identities. The black and brown stripes were added to commemorate marginalized members who are also people of colour, as well as members of the community who have lost to/ are currently living with HIV/ AIDS. The trans flag was added to represent the trans community, and they are in a chevron shape to represent the need to move forward.

The flag was updated and is often used by members of the communities as well as allies because it depicts how we must be aware of the changing community climate.

We believe that Havergal College should continue to pursue adequately supporting the LGBTQIA2S+ individuals within the community all year round, rather than for a brief week. Conversations should be initiated on how we can help and support people to create a safe environment for people to be free to express their identities.

We believe that those conversations can start with the flag and what it represents, and hope that this persuades the school to keep it up.

Thank you.
