Re-Instate the SafeRide Shuttle Program

Given that the University of Denver has reported, through student bulletins, numerous incidents of assault around the University in the last ten years, which have involved active Denver Police Department investigations…..
Given that the SafeRide Program offered a secure alternative for members of the DU community to avoid walking alone and risking assault when traversing the area at night…..
Given that, the SafeRide Program demonstrated an interest by the University Administration in minimizing the risk to its community members, which is now in question….
Given that the alternative of requesting that a Campus Safety escort walk community members from place to place is less efficient, more burdensome to all concerned, and fails to address the problem of wheelchair users having to traverse snowy, uneven streets in the winter…..
Given that other Colorado Colleges and Universities, including the University of Colorado at Boulder, The University of Northern Colorado, Colorado State University, the three colleges and universities at the Auraria Campus, and Colorado College, all have equivalent shuttles for the use of their community members, and…..
Given that termination of the SafeRide Program at DU is anticipated after June 10, 2012…..

We, members of the University of Denver Community, respectfully request that the DU Administration reconsider the importance of the SafeRide Program and reinstate it with at least one accessible shuttle available whenever the campus is open during evening hours.
