Students deserve to have the option to pass or fail their classes this semester due to the unprecedented circumstances occurring this year.

Colgate students were very fortunate to be given the option to return to campus this semester. We don't negate that this is a privilege and a great step towards a new type of normalcy, but would like to emphasize that this type of learning is still not emblematic of a Colgate education. Not only are most classes still taking place virtually, but also much of the student body is studying remotely. It is unfair to these students to treat this as a normal semester, deserving of a normal grading system.

Further, while the commitment to community health is extremely important for maintaining a state of in-person education and for the greater health of the Hamilton community, its requirements have had an extreme impact on the mental, physical, and social health of students. In an instagram poll, many students replied that the isolation of online learning and preventative measures of limiting the size of groups has left them depressed and anxious. Students can not perform to their best ability when under such emotional stress.

Additionally, on top of the stress of classes, students must cope with the stress of a global pandemic, a life-changing election, climate change, threats to human rights, and a civil rights movement. It is frankly unreasonable to expect students to place all of their energy on school while these life altering events are occurring.

We understand that pass/fail is not a feasible or desired option for some students, and we would like to respect these students by making it an option in a format similar to last semester.

We are extremely grateful for all of the work that the administration has done to keep us safe and healthy during our return to campus. We simply ask that they can go one step further to ensure the emotional and academic security of students as well.
