The Issue

Water is a basic human right that ensures our health, and for only private or wealthier schools to have met these health needs shows how little public schools care about their student’s health. In 2010, the Californian Senate passed bill 1413, also known as Hunger-Free Kids Act. However, schools weren’t able to commit as there wasn’t enough funding provided to ensure free, healthy, and accessible water for all students. At least 40% of school districts responded to an online survey stating that their students do not have access to free drinking water in areas where meals are served. As of July 1, 2011, schools started implementing access to free water for students.

Filtered water bottle fountains is an ideal solution for schools to ensure free and clean water for all students, as these specific fountains decrease the intake of plastic that goes into our bodies and reduces lead containment. They are also much cleaner, as students wouldn’t be putting their mouth onto them, contaminating the fountain, but instead fill up their reusable water bottle so that trips to the fountain are less frequent, increasing a student's time in a classroom to learn. As of right now, schools do not have enough water fountains placed throughout the school, decreasing a student’s water intake as it is harder to get a refill between classes. Water is vital for the human body, and it is unorthodox to not provide students with essential tools to be their best learning selves in a classroom. By adding more filtered water bottle fountains, it ensures the health of the students in the school, a beneficial factor for their learning.
