Supporting Women in Entertainment

After many weeks and months of what we hope will continue to hold toxic men accountable for their actions in the entertainment industry and beyond, we the undersigned also hope that women, particularly this year, are championed for the great work that they do. No more should women have to "share" accolades with men. In the entertainment industry that starts with awards: the long fight towards the "Oscar" race continually keeps out deserving women.
We, the undersigned, petition the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences to recognize women in all arenas of film-making and to recognize the women who have showed gone above and beyond to produce and help films be great.
This starts with women at the helm: this year alone we have great films from Dee Rees, who could earn a historic first Best Director nomination for an first African-American female director, debut director Greta Gerwig, award-winning director Sofia Coppola, blockbuster maven Patty Jenkins, the incomparable Agnes Varda, and so, so many more who deserve to be in contention for competitive Oscars.
Further, we ask that the Academy take into account the views of the many, many movie-goers who fuel the film industry who have lauded performances from comedic breakout Tiffany Haddish (Girls Trip) to Daniela Vega (A Fantastic Woman) who would be the first trans woman to be nominated for an acting award, to Kirsten Dunst (The Beguiled) who has consistently been a staunch supporter of female directors, to Jessica Chastain (Molly's Game) who has been vocal critic of the awful system that has plagued this industry, to Bria Vinaite (The Florida Project) who authentically portray the working-class female base of this country, we want these women to be awarded for their stellar work. That "Oscar-pundits" have a demonstrably obvious male-bias, as well as a record to ensuring as far as possible that only they have a say in who gets in and who does not, is obvious. This must change.
Only when we have women at the helm can we truly see the transformative change that has begun. Sign this petition if you agree!
