The Student Academy Awards is an international student film competition run by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Every year, university and college students have the opportunity to compete for recognition from the most prestigious organization in the entertainment industry.

However, this competition currently excludes a vital group of students: the screenwriters. As of right now, the Academy only accepts completed films that were submitted for a grade. This excludes student screenwriters because these students only produce written work. Join us in asking the Academy to allow student screenwriters to submit a feature-length screenplay for consideration.  Per the existing rules, all screenplays submitted must have been submitted for a grade in a university or college course.

Creating a screenplay category in the Student Academy Awards would reassure aspiring screenwriters of their worth in the industry and give them a chance to participate in a distinguished competition alongside their peers. The addition of this category would mean a great deal to student screenwriters who wish to launch their careers in a meaningful way. Celebrating student screenwriters means giving more diverse, meaningful stories a chance to be heard.

The only existing screenwriting competition for up-and-coming writers is the Nicholl's Fellowship, but it is not specifically for students and therefore puts students at a disadvantage. We feel that it is difficult for students to compete with 7,000+ screenwriters of all ages, with only a 0.0007% chance of becoming a fellow.

Please help us encourage the Academy to celebrate student screenwriters and their value in the entertainment industry. After all, they will write some of your favorite films in the future.
