Thank President Obama and VP Biden for supporting same-sex marriage

This is big.

In the wake of the recent heartbreaking vote in North Carolina, President Barack Obama has joined Vice President Joe Biden in making a public statement in support of marriage equality.

Thank President Obama and Vice President Biden for speaking out in favor of same-sex marriage.

On May 9, voters in the state of North Carolina amended their constitution to ban not only gay marriage but also civil unions and domestic partnerships for same-sex couples. Some say the law will even prevent a company from offering insurance benefits to an employee's same-sex life partner.

Prior to North Carolina's election, President Obama urged people in North Carolina to vote against the constitutional amendment, but he did not take a stand in support of gay marriage -- until now.

In an interview with ABC News, the president said: "I've just concluded that for me personally, it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married."   Vice President Joe Biden was the first to take a stand. While he shared President Obama's reluctance to endorse marriage equality for same sex couples on the campaign trail in 2008, he recently made a very public reversal on the subject stating on Meet the Press that he was "absolutely comfortable" with gay marriage.

Thank President Obama and Vice President Biden for speaking out in favor of same-sex marriage.

It's long since time for President Obama to get on the right side of history when it comes to equality for gays and lesbians. He has made history. Let's make sure he hears a huge roar of thanks from Americans who believe that everyone, gay or straight, should have the right to marry the person they love.

The results coming out of North Carolina showed us the problem with putting fundamental human rights up for a vote. A majority of voters, spurred by a campaign of fear-mongering and lies, should not have the power to restrict anyone's basic rights. Clear leadership from the president and vice president on equal rights for gays and lesbians can help move the entire nation towards equality.

No doubt President Obama's endorsement of gay marriage was a long time coming because of enormous pressure exerted on the White House by those who support homophobia and discrimination.

Now that President Obama has done the right thing and come out in favor of equal rights for same-sex couples, he needs the backing of all of us who support this historic move.
