Thank Peacekeepers for Putting Their Lives on the Line for Peace
United Nations peacekeepers put themselves in harm's way to promote peace in some of the world's most dangerous reasons. In the face of natural disasters, violence, accidents and disease, the many brave men and women that serve as UN peacekeepers protect civilians and stabilize entire regions.
The dangers they face are all too real:
-- Just a few days ago, on May 27, a bomb attack injured six Italian UN peacekeepers in Lebanon.
-- In early April, seven peacekeepers were killed in an attack on a UN compound in Afghanistan.
-- 32 lives, many of them UN staff, were lost in the Democratic Republic of Congo later in April when a plane serving the UN peacekeeping operation crashed.
These recent tragedies are a sobering reminder that 120,000 military, police and civilian personnel serving in peacekeeping missions across the world put their lives on the line in the name of peace.
They have traveled far from home to join with the UN to help where help is needed most – in places where conflict or disaster have taken a heavy toll and where peace is a precious commodity.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon marked May 29th, the International Day of UN Peacekeepers, by saying:
"Their deployment is a manifestation of our collective conviction that people who have survived a war should not have to suffer again through a period of insecurity, injustice and fear – and that only by removing these conditions can we engender lasting peace.”
Honor UN peacekeepers today and let them know you appreciate their sacrifice in the interest of peace. Thank UN peacekeepers today!
- Thank a peacekeeper!
I believe that people who have suffered through war and survived should not have to suffer through a period of insecurity, injustice and fear. The men and women who are peacekeepers around the globe bring peace, security and stability so that communities once rocked by violence can now thrive.
I want to thank you for your incredible and important work to foster peace in the world.
