Reinstate the Gunn and PALY Volunteer Coordinators, Norma Hesterman & Beth Martin

This petition had 305 supporters

PAUSD School Board Members, please consider reinstating the Volunteer Coordinator positions at Gunn and PALY.

Our school district has a budget shortfall and the school board plans to cut funds for programs and staff to meet their numbers. This means that Gunn will depend even MORE on volunteers to fill some of the gaps. The Volunteer Coordinator positions (Norma Hesterman 30 years in the job at Gunn, and Beth Martin with 13 years in the job at PALY) have been cut and with these jobs go the history of community volunteers for programs that desperately need these volunteers.  The Volunteer Coordinator position is only 10 hours per week and both women work more than that off the clock.

Programs that will be impacted by lack of volunteer recruitment include Focus on Success, World Languages, the Academic Center, English Language Learners, our library, and many other programs translating, tutoring (all subjects), demonstrating skills, constructing sets, exam proctoring, preparing science labs, arranging field trips, chaperoning activities, mentoring, data entry, stocking disaster backpacks, mending books, work in the College and Career Center, and soliciting parent speakers and mentors to volunteer at school.

Reversal of this decision will allow us to retain two of the most dedicated staff members that truly impact students all across our high schools. As Superintendent, Max McGee said, "What impresses me most is the commitment of our entire staff to the welfare of every child."

The two women in the Volunteer Coordinator positions are staff members that support Dr. McGee's mission of staff that are committed to “developing our students' knowledge, critical thinking, and problem solving skills; nurturing their curiosity, etc.”

Thank you for your consideration.
