There is a need to address key issues that affect the Black student population at Texas Tech University. On this campus, there is an aura of indifference and lack of care for the Black student population.
It is a fact that there is less than 2% of Black faculty and staff on this campus. It is a fact that there have never been a Black Dean on this campus.
It is a fact that there are no Black counselors in the Wellness Center. It is a fact that according to the Institutional Research website, over the past five fall enrollments from 2012-2017, the percentage of African Americans has been about six percent and has not increased.
It is a fact that the lack of recruitment and acceptance of Black students results in lower applications and admissions. Out of all applicants at Texas Tech University for Fall 2017- only 8% were Black, compared to 47% who were Hispanic and 33% who were Caucasian.
It is a fact there is a lack of retention amongst Black Alumni.
It is a fact there is not adequate funding for Black student scholarships. It is a fact that culture insensitivty exist on this campus.
Enough is Enough! It is time to take a stand.
