March for Mercy at Austin, Tx. April 7
Apr 6, 2012 — A herd of burros, led by local residents and burro advocates will ride through Austin to the Capitol on Saturday, April 5 to urge Governor Perry to protect wild burros by declaring the animals a Texas Heritage Species. The march is in support of a popular campaign on Change.org. We applaud the announcement of the temporary cease-fire, but the fate of the wild burros still hangs in the balance. The wild burros that are so unwelcome in Big Bend Ranch State Park are part of a far larger regional population in northern Mexico. Removing every burro found there today will be a short-term fix, because new burros will re-enter the Park soon after a rescue of those found there now. The wild burros deserve recognition of their significance to Texans and Americans as a heritage species, symbol of pioneer spirit, and their status as an integral part of the land - all of these were granted and protected by the Wild and Free-Roaming Horse and Burro Act of 1971.
