Zachary Henry started this petition to Texas State House and

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “The ultimate tragedy is not the oppression and cruelty by the bad people but the silence over that by the good people.”

There have been more than 18 mass shootings in 2019 so far. Two of the most horrific took place here in Texas. First the tragedy in El Paso claiming 22 lives and now 7 more victims in Odessa. We are in the midst of an apathetic epidemic in this country. So many idly post the futile “thoughts and prayers” on social media for likes and shares in order to salve their discomfort and to distance themselves from the imminent threat. The millions of americans living in cognitive dissonance, celebrating our democracy and the power of the people, yet remaining passive when it’s time to take action, is a repulsive reminder of privilege. We must acknowledge too the pressing mobilization of white supremacy, rallying in their racism, enticing these mass murders. No longer can we stand in silence, especially as students less than a mile from the Texas State Capitol.

The State of Texas would predictably get an “F” from the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, because Universal background checks are not required, military style weapons are legal to own, one can buy a rifle at 18 without a permit, it is legal for one to make their gun an automatic weapon as long as they pay the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, firearms and explosives a $200 tax. As of today, Sunday, September 1st, gun control has become even looser, further threatening countless future lives. Any handgun owner, licensed or not, can openly carry for a full week after a state or federal disaster zone is declared, landlords can no longer ban the possession of guns, and the state will no longer limit the number of school faculty and staff that can be designated as “armed school marshalls.” Not to forgot the “Gay and Trans Panic Defense,” in which it is legally justified to kill a gay or trans individuals on the basis the perpetrator claims that their victim’s sexual orientation or gender identity not only explains – but excuses – their loss of self-control and subsequent assault. The State of Texas has the provisionary legislation to fan the flames of hate crimes, and it has become very apparent it’s effective at doing so.

It is our imperative obligation as a community of “world changers” to immediately speak up. Sign this petition now and call for stringent gun control to help prevent the mass loss of lives in the days, months, and years to come. Silence is complacency and complacency is the problem.
