Michael Wells started this petition to Texas State House and

No one ever thinks that they'll go into surgery and have a life-altering effect come from it. We all know that we're responsible if we get into a car accident. We're also responsible if we're homeowners and someone gets hurt on our property. Businesses are held responsible for slips, trips and falls on their property, so why do doctors and hospitals have a limit on what they're responsible for when it comes to medical negligence?

When it comes to things like perforated intestines, it becomes life-changing. You may spend weeks to months in the hospital, rehab, and emergency rooms. There's time missed from work for the injured and their caregivers. There's paying for medical supplies that were not previously budgeted for. There's having to purchase food from hospital cafeterias or nearby restaurants while waiting for care. There's having to pay for travel expenses to go for medical treatment. There's numerous other expenses that most people just don't account for, not including the mental and physical drain it causes to the injured and their family.

It's time that the maximum for malpractice lawsuits be removed in the state of Texas. It's not reasonable that a homeowner, a driver or a small business can be sued for more than a doctor who you trusted to do the right thing with your health and life to walk away almost unscathed for verifiable negligence.
