Nadia Eimandoust started this petition to "Texas State Board of Education"

The standards for the sexual education curriculum in Texas have not been revised in 23 years. Many teens have not been taught about birth control options beyond abstinence, and students all over the state have reported experiencing teachers who emphasize shame over accuracy.

For the first time since 1997, Texas education officials are considering a new statewide policy for teaching sex and health, which would include middle schoolers learning about contraceptives, sexually transmitted infections and the importance of consent. The new standards would also teach sexual orientation and gender identity, which is vital for supporting LGBTQ students who are more likely to be discriminated against and bullied.

The board is expected to make a final decision by November. Federal data shows Texas consistently has one of the highest teen birth rates in the country, which studies show correlates with an emphasis on abstinence-only education. We must actively voice to the State Board of Education the importance of including comprehensive sexual education in the Texas public school curriculum.
