Petitioning Texas State Board of Education

Develop a curriculum in Mexican American Studies for Texas high school students and ask Barbara Cargill to move this initiative from a "Discussion" to an "Action Item" at the next meeting on April 9.

Mexican Americans now constitute the majority of school-age children in Texas, and this percentage will continue to grow. Studies have shown that there is a direct link between academic success and a positive self-image and knowledge of one's cultural identity and history. Given the dismal dropout rate in Texas, Mexican American Studies will help Texas students succeed, graduate from high school and move on to college, or some other training that will prepare them for the increasingly technical jobs of the 21st century. Mexican American Studies will help all Texas children succeed in this vastly changing global economy and community.
