For Several years I have personally been watching the pattern of ducks in our local area, as well as keeping up with friends across Texas. Ducks are showing up late in the season, ( usually the last weekend and a few days after season ends) and are here heavily in the month of February! For some, getting those prized ducks are all they are after, and I admit, I have a few beauties myself. But our family hunts for food. 85% of what we eat a year is meat that we put in the freezer ourselves. January 30th 2022 was the last day of the season, we took out 5 hunters, we got 1 bird! Only about 10 came in, and out of those 10 only 2 decoyed. The very next weekend, February 5th, 2022....I decided to take my camera and go hiking and check out my ponds and hopefully get some good photos and do what I have been doing yearly......and to my surprise as usual, there were almost 200 ducks on my ponds. Texas waterfowl hunters are losing out on great hunting opportunities, because we don't have a late enough season to accommodate the pattern of the ducks as they come down from the North! We are petitioning that we extend our season into February, to accommodate these patterns!
