The annual (for most vehicles) vehicle inspection is time-consuming and wasteful of resources (lost wages, loss of free time, travel costs). 
A biennial inspection (every 2 years) would be more reasonable and not result in significant reduction in safety. 
Many places, especially rural Texas cannot find an inspection station within 50 miles of home - and most stations are swamped, resulting in lengthy waits.
The annual vehicle inspection is regrettably, a government over-reach.
