Jesse Aquino started this petition to Texas Legislature and

We are in favor of opposing Senate Bill 3, otherwise known as the controversial "Bathroom Bill" in Texas. This is a bill that attempts to regulate all bathrooms and requires persons to use the bathroom based on the sex that is listed on their birth certificate. This bill directly affects and negatively impacts the transgender community. Senate Bill 3 would be implemented within schools and buildings that are overseen by the local government, including cities and counties. Senate Bill 3 does not acknowledge, respect, or support the transgender community and dismisses the various gender identities within the transgender community. This bill requires persons to use the bathroom that is stated on their birth certificate and although this may be suitable for some, it is not accommodating to people who do not identify with their sex/gender that is assigned to them at birth. Please keep in mind that sex and gender are two different concepts and although they overlap, sex and gender are not dependent on each other. Senate Bill 3 was voted on by the Texas Senate in 2017 but is now considered a "dead bill" meaning no further action has taken place. Although this bill is stagnant and has not been pushed any further, we still need to advocate our opposition and oppose this bill.

A small group of students at Texas Woman's University in the Social Work program are bringing awareness to this issue. We aim to solve the problem by advocating for the transgender community and insist they use the bathroom they best identify with. We must support the transgender community and treat them with the dignity and respect they deserve. This petition was created in the hopes to recruit supporters and create enough momentum to completely repeal Senate Bill 3. Your support makes a difference.

Your signatures will be collected and then sent off to Representative Lois Kolkhorst, the Texas Legislature and other critical decision makers who drafted the bill. We hope that these signatures will create momentum that persuades Representative Kolkhorst and other decision makers to retract the bill and help eliminate the oppression of transgender people.
